Five minutes on foot from our house stands a building that has been promising the same thing since 1877: rest you don't have to search for. You walk in, leave everything behind — clothes, phone, thoughts — and follow a path that has remained the same for almost 150 years. 17 stations, warm thermal water, a domed hall with frescoes on the ceiling.

Three hours later you step out and notice that something has shifted.
The Friedrichsbad is not a fun pool and not a wellness temple. It is a place for people who find it hard to switch off — and who need somewhere that takes the decision out of their hands.

The ritual:
17 stations, one path.

At the Friedrichsbad there is no free movement, no going back and forth between pools and loungers, no deciding what comes next. Instead you follow a set sequence — room by room, station by station.

You begin with a warm shower. Then dry hot air that slowly opens the body. After that, the first thermal pool — warm, still, the water carries you. From there you move into hotter rooms where the steam thickens and the muscles let go.

Then comes the change: cooler water that wakes the circulation. The soap-brush massage, where someone else does the work. And at the end, the centrepiece — the dome pool. You lie in warm water, look up into the 17-metre dome with hand-painted frescoes, and hear nothing but the gentle sound of water.
Afterwards: moisturiser, rest room, tea. The reading room is quiet. Nobody hurries here.

No phone, no book, no conversation — that is not a house rule, it simply happens. Once you have lain in the dome pool and looked up at the ceiling, you understand why.

Mark Twain wrote about the Friedrichsbad:
"After ten minutes you forget the time, and after twenty minutes the world."

That was 1878. It still holds true.

A visit to the Friedrichsbad should above all be one thing: uncomplicated. You don't need to bring anything — really nothing. Bath shoes, towels, shampoo, body lotion: everything is waiting for you there. At the end of the ritual you are served aromatic tea in the reading room. Just go as you are.

Admission is 39 € per person.
There is no time limit on your visit — most guests stay around three hours, some longer. Nobody watches the clock.

One note: the Friedrichsbad is accessible from the age of 14, under 18 only accompanied by an adult. This is due to the water temperature and the stillness — both require a certain maturity.

Opening hours & current information:

Opening hours: Daily 9:00 – 22:00. Last admission is three hours before closing, at 19:00 — keep this in mind if you plan to go in the evening.

Closed on 24 and 25 December. New Year's Eve 9:00 – 20:00. New Year's Day 11:00 – 22:00.

Our tip: Weekdays are quietest — particularly in the morning. If you want the tall rooms almost to yourself, a Tuesday or Thursday is ideal.

What makes the Friedrichsbad special:

A building that is an experience in itself.

Most thermal baths are functional buildings. The Friedrichsbad is architecture. Carl Dernfeld designed it in 1877 in the Renaissance style — as the most modern bathhouse in Europe at the time. The floor plan follows the ancient Caracalla baths in Rome: axially symmetrical, oriented towards the domed hall, with Corinthian columns and hand-painted majolica tiles. From the entrance hall to the last rest room, you sense that nothing here stands by chance.

UNESCO World Heritage.

Since July 2021, Baden-Baden's bathing landscape has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage — and the Friedrichsbad is a central part of it. The recognition came because a bathing tradition stretching back over 2,000 years has remained alive here to this day. You can visit it, bathe in it, study the frescoes — this is not a museum behind glass, it is a bath that works.

A labour of love.

The Friedrichsbad is run by the same operator as the Caracalla Therme. A bath that is not designed for crowds but for atmosphere. The rooms are well maintained, the mood is quiet, and the staff take their time.

Textile-free or with swimwear:

For many years, the Friedrichsbad was exclusively textile-free. Since the UNESCO recognition, there are now days when swimwear is worn — so that guests who would like to see the building but prefer not to bathe without clothing can also take part.

The current arrangement:

Traditionally without swimwear: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday.
With swimwear (exclusively): Wednesday and Saturday.

Everyone decides for themselves which day suits them best. Those who go on a quiet day — ideally during the week — can have the tall, sparsely visited rooms almost to themselves. That is the moment when the Friedrichsbad is at its most powerful.

The private baths — a room just for you:

If you want something truly private, you can hire a private bathroom at the Friedrichsbad — your own room with a sunken bathtub, all to yourself. Strikingly beautiful and quickly booked out.

Private baths make a wonderful gift (vouchers are available in the Friedrichsbad's online shop) or a special occasion for two. Book early — demand is high.

Friedrichsbad or Caracalla Therme?

Both spas sit just around the corner from us. Both draw on the same thermal water. But the experience is fundamentally different. Which suits you better depends on what you are in the mood for.

The Friedrichsbad is for people who want to find real stillness. A set sequence, no phone, no book. Historic surroundings, tall rooms, frescoes on the ceiling. Ideal if you find it hard to switch off, or if you are looking for a ritual that takes the decision out of your hands. Particularly good alone or as a couple.

The Caracalla Therme is more sociable. Free movement between indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna area, lawns in the open air. A book on the lounger, a conversation with a friend in the current channel — both are possible here: retreat and encounter. Always with swimwear. For our hotel guests, reached directly through the underground passage.

Many guests choose both — depending on their mood and the time of day. The Friedrichsbad in the morning for the stillness, the Caracalla in the afternoon for the sun in the outdoor pool. Or the other way round.

Cat paws and statues of gods — the history beneath your feet

The Friedrichsbad does not stand here by chance. It stands on the ground where the Romans built their soldiers' baths over 2,000 years ago — the baths of Emperor Caracalla, after whom the neighbouring spa is also named.

Right by the Friedrichsbad you can visit the Roman bath ruins. In the floor you can still see the footprints of a cat that walked through fresh cement some 2,000 years ago. A small detail that delights history lovers — and children even more so.

And our own house? During excavations on the grounds of Aqua Aurelia, traces of the Roman past were found — including what is thought to be a statue of the god Mercury. The street above our house is still called Merkurstraße to this day.

Baden-Baden was once known as Aquae Aureliae — the golden waters. Our hotel name, Aqua Aurelia, derives from exactly that.
